On May 25, 1977, a movie was quietly released that changed The Monkeys life forever. I was fortunate enough to have lived near a town that was one of only 40 theaters playing it. It was called Star Wars, and it opened me up to the world of film. I say that because before I saw it, I just enjoyed movies, afterward I truly liked them. It led me to watching everything I could see. It was because of Star Wars that I had some treasured childhood moments watching old Flash Gordon serials with my mom. It also kindled in me a growing fascination with film. This fascination turned to outright passion one Saturday night when night I watched a different kind of movie. That movie was Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, and in that moment, I knew that the rest of my life would revolve around movies. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of this pivotal moment, The Monkey is hosting his second giveaway. The Winner will receive the original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray (now called episode 4-6, but I tend to pretend the others don’t exist, and that the Ewoks are actually Wookies. Trust me, It’s cooler that way.) Oh, what the hell I’ll also throw in a Blu-Ray of Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast. The Rules are simple: You must follow this blog. Every cogent comment you make on an article here from now until midnight (Eastern Time) May 24 counts as one entry. On the 25th one blog follower will be drawn at random from all eligible entries and awarded the whole kit and caboodle (unless these Blu-Rays are not available in the country in which you live, in which case you will receive an Amazon Gift Card of equal value). It is that simple. Enjoy, and may the force be with you.

  28. I follow via email. I was ten years old in 1977 and saw Star Wars at the theater. It was the most amazing thing.

  29. I am a subscriber. My whole family loves Star Wars. This would be great to own.

  30. So what do you about the Star Wars Toothbrushes?

    • I picked up two of the three lightsaber toothbrushes at Walmart last weekend. They were more expensive than other children’s “trick” toothbrushes, and they don’t vibrate or spin, they just flash for one minute, so you know you’re brushing long enough. Although my dentist says you should brush for two minutes. Maybe it’s different for children. I don’t know. Anyway, the toothbrushes are clever enough, I suppose, but a way gyp on the price.

  31. Did you ever watch the Ewok movie and its sequel?

    • Of course I did. I was also (un)fortunate enough to witness the Star Wars Christmas special on its original broadcast.

      • Note to self: avoid Christmas star wars stuff.

      • Actually it is very amusing in the same way that Plan 9 From Outer Space or Battlefield Earth are. I highly recommend, but the ensuing laughter may cause you to soil yourself so I suggest some depends.

      • I didn’t get to see Star Wars until the re-release in 1978, just a few weeks before the Star Wars Holiday Special aired (as I recall, it was around Thanksgiving, not so much Christmas). I remember dancing with joy in the street (I lived on a dead end so my life was not so much at risk) when the premiere was just hours away. Even at age 13, and in that hyperexcited state to boot, I was sorely disappointed. It was amazing to see all the gang, but the lame filler with Bea Arthur and Harvey Korman..??? ::sigh:: And there’s something not quite right about all Wookiees besides Chewbacca. Something about their necks – or lack thereof – is just wrong.
